Grasping
This system, created by researchers at Autolab, a robotics lab at the University of California, Berkeley, represented the limits of technology a few years ago. The machine is equipped with a two-finger "pliers" that can pick up objects like screwdrivers or pliers and sort them into different containers.
The pliers are easier to control than five fingers, and the software needed to create a pincer is less difficult to operate. It can handle some less familiar objects. For example, it may not know what a restaurant-style ketchup bottle is, but it knows that the bottle is similar in shape to a screwdriver.
Pickup
Everyone wants a robot that can pick up anything, including things it has never seen before. Here's the robot that other Autolab researchers have built over the past few years.
